During the evening the group gets to know two very particular figures: the young and capricious Caroline de Roufebiur, daughter of the wife of the Marquis de Lefebvre, a distant relative of Hortense's husband, who immediately takes a liking to Oscar and is therefore excessively jealous. During the dance, Loulou, the curious and pestiferous six-year-old daughter of Hortence, tries in vain to sneak into the reception hall, but always ends up being discovered by her mother. Putting these tales aside, Hortense warns her guests that the next evening, in their honor, a ball will be held in which all the local nobles have been invited. Moreover, it seems that with them also Henri Jobert, the best watchmaker in France, has disappeared. When the three arrive, they learn that for some time the girls of the village have been mysteriously disappearing without leaving any trace and it is speculated that a sect of vampires is involved. While driving, Oscar's carriage is passed by another one with an elegant lady and a beautiful young man inside. Oscar sees this but can do nothing, but later in court speaks of it and is challenged to a duel. Rosalie's neighbour, a young boy, steals from a Duke's carriage and the Duke kills him. Rosalie looks for work, and is given a livre by Oscar. Marie Antoinette spends money lavishly on friends and fashion, despite Oscar telling her that France's finances are in a dire state, and other ladies follow the queen's example. The King dies and Madame du Barry is sent to a convent. Marie Antoinette begins openly favouring Fersen. 栄光の座によいしれて ( Eikou no za ni yoishirete, Basking in the Seat of Glory) At court, she is determined not to acknowledge Madame du Barry, her father-in-law's mistress.
